Ceramic Coating Aftercare: What to Do in the First 30 Days
The 30 days after coating are the most important for long-term performance. What to avoid, how to wash safely, and what the curing process actually involves.
Why the first 30 days matter most
Ceramic coatings require a curing period after application before they reach full hardness and chemical resistance. The coating bonds with the clear coat through an ongoing chemical process that continues for several weeks. What you do, or do not do, during this period directly affects the long-term performance and durability of the product.
The first 48 hours: the critical window
The 48 hours immediately after application are the most sensitive. The coating is curing and any contamination that adheres to the surface during this period can bond into the partially cured layer. Keep the car away from water, bird droppings, tree sap, and any chemical contact. If rain is unavoidable, keep the car in a garage or covered parking.
Do not wash the car for at least five to seven days after coating. Your installer will give you a specific timeframe based on the product used. Water contact during early cure can leave water marks that become permanent as the coating hardens.
Days 7 to 30: establishing the right habits
After the initial no-wash period, you can wash the car again, but with the correct method. This is the period to establish habits that will determine how long your coating performs.
- ▸Hand wash only: no automatic car washes of any type, including touchless ones that use high-pressure jets with strong chemicals.
- ▸pH-neutral shampoo: standard car wash soaps are often slightly alkaline and will begin stripping the coating's hydrophobic properties over time.
- ▸Two-bucket method: one bucket for clean soapy water, one for rinsing your washmitt between panels. This prevents swirl-inducing grit from being dragged across the paint.
- ▸Soft microfibre wash mitt: no sponges, no brushes.
- ▸Rinse before washing: always rinse loose dirt off the surface before touching it with a wash mitt.
- ▸Dry with a clean microfibre towel: air drying leaves water spot marks, particularly in Geelong's hard water conditions.
What to avoid permanently
These are not just first-month restrictions; they apply for the life of the coating:
- ▸Automatic car washes: brushes cause micro-scratches; chemicals break down the coating.
- ▸Wax or polish on top of the coating: these do not bond to ceramic and can leave a hazy residue.
- ▸Acidic cleaners: wheel cleaners, bug removers, and some all-purpose cleaners with low pH will degrade the coating.
- ▸Harsh degreasers near painted surfaces.
- ▸Leaving bird droppings, tree sap, or insect residue on the surface for extended periods: the coating resists etching but does not eliminate it. Remove these within 24 to 48 hours where possible.
Ongoing care after the first month
After the first 30 days, the coating is at full performance. A wash every two to three weeks using the correct method will keep it performing well. Once or twice a year, a ceramic maintenance spray (SiO2 boost spray) can be applied during the wash process to refresh the hydrophobic layer. This is a five-minute addition to a normal wash and meaningfully extends the life of the coating.
An annual inspection by your installer is worthwhile for premium coating grades. It allows early identification of any contamination or degradation and a corrective service before problems compound.
